BAKFlip MX4 Review: Features, Fitment, and Tradeoffs

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

The BAKFlip MX4 is worth considering if you want a rigid truck bed cover that folds out of the way for larger loads. Its main appeal is flexibility: keep everyday cargo concealed, then open the bed when you need to haul something tall.

This review covers the standard MX4 GEN 3 using published product information. We have not personally installed or tested it.

Our verdict

The MX4 makes sense for owners who want hard panels and access to the bed without routinely removing the cover. Before buying, check three things: the exact vehicle application, how the folded panels affect your view, and whether you need compatibility with a rack.

It deserves a place on your shortlist. Whether it deserves your money depends on how you use your truck.

What you get

RealTruck lists aluminum panels reinforced with a polymer core, aluminum rails, automatic latching panels, perimeter seals, and a drainage system. The GEN 3 folds upright against the cab for full bed access, with bumpers and prop rods supporting that position. See the current product specifications.

RealTruck also lists a 400-pound evenly distributed load capacity. That describes a spread load, not permission to stand on one spot or strap heavy equipment to the panels. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact application.

The biggest advantage: room for changing loads

A useful truck bed cover needs to accommodate more than the cargo you carry on an ordinary Tuesday.

The MX4’s folding design lets you open sections of the bed or fold the panels upright when you need the space. RealTruck says the third brake light remains visible in the approved open positions. The upright panels sit against the rear window, so expect a tradeoff in rearward visibility.

Think about your usual loads before deciding. If you alternate between groceries, tools, and bulky materials, that flexibility could be valuable. If you almost never haul anything tall, it may matter less.

Security: understand what you’re buying

RealTruck describes revised automatic latching panels on the GEN 3 as an improvement over the previous design. That is a manufacturer claim, not a result from our own security testing.

We would treat a truck bed cover as one layer of protection. For expensive tools, consider how you will secure them inside the bed and where you leave the truck overnight.

Weather protection: keep expectations realistic

The MX4 includes perimeter seals and a drainage system. Those features are intended to manage water, but they do not establish that every installed cover will keep every drop out.

Our recommendation is simple: after installation, check the bed following rain or a controlled water test before trusting it with anything moisture sensitive. Keep electronics, paperwork, and other vulnerable cargo in suitable containers.

Fitment is the purchase that matters most

“Fits my truck” needs to mean more than matching the badge on the grille. Before ordering, confirm:

  • Model year and exact truck model
  • Bed length
  • Factory storage boxes and bed rail equipment
  • Tailgate configuration
  • Existing bed bars, racks, or other accessories
  • The manufacturer’s application notes for the exact part number

For example, RealTruck’s listing for part 448227RB specifies a particular Ram application and warns that a Ram TRX bed bar requires removal. That restriction should not be generalized to every MX4, but it shows why reading the application notes matters.

Installation and maintenance

RealTruck advertises installation in approximately 30 minutes using its clamp and click-in system. Treat that as the seller’s estimate. Leave yourself enough time to read the instructions, align the rails, check the seals, and test every latch.

Its published care instructions call for checking clamps after the first week of driving and periodically afterward. They also require securing the cover correctly while driving and clearing snow or ice before opening it. Read the installation and care details.

Pros and cons

Rigid folding panelsUpright panels affect the rear window view
Full bed access without removing the coverExact vehicle application needs careful checking
Published five-year limited warrantyWarranty has conditions and exclusions
Several opening positionsRack compatibility needs separate confirmation

Don’t confuse the MX4 versions

The standard GEN 3 is not the only MX4 option.

The MX4 TS adds integrated T-slot rails intended for compatible racks and accessories. Accessories are sold separately, and compatibility still needs checking.

The MX4 EZ-Lift is a separate model marketed around easier lifting and a different opening mechanism. If opening effort is a priority, compare that version before ordering the standard model.

Is the BAKFlip MX4 worth buying?

Shortlist the MX4 if you want rigid panels, regularly change what you haul, and value opening the bed without removing the entire cover.

Compare other designs if preserving the rear window view, minimizing lifting effort, or integrating a rack is your main concern.

Before you buy, choose your exact truck application and read its installation and compatibility notes. The right version for your truck matters more than the MX4 name on the box.
